City of Ghosts

City of Ghosts paneutuu kaupunkitilan merkityksiin ja katsomiseen. Sarja lähtee liikkeelle "tuoreesta vieraan katseesta", siitä miten turisti ja asukas katsovat eri tavoin kaupunkitilaa. Se jatkuu pohtien pysyvyyttä ja ihmisen ohikiitävää läsnäoloa ikuisessa kaupungissa. Ikuisessako? New Yorkissa kuvattu City of Ghosts katsoo kaupungin sosioekonomisia hierarkioita anonyymien hahmojen ja terävänä näkyvien yläkerrosten avulla. Ja jossain taustalla häämöttää muisto syyskuun yhdennentoista tapahtumista.

Kohde ja kuvaustapa perustuvat suurkaupunkilaisen näkökulman ja vieraan, turistin, näkökulmien väliseen ristiriitaan. Metropolin asukas ei kulje turistin lailla niska kenossa ihastellen ja ihmetellen korkeita rakennuksia. Useimmiten hän unohtaa arjessaan sen kaiken, niin tottunut on hän maailmaansa.

Valitsen vain kapean siivun korkeiden, kauniiden rakennusten julkisivusta.   Käännän perinteisen katukuvauksen päälaelleen keskittymällä rakennettuun ympäristöön ja jättämällä ihmiset epäteräväksi taustaksi etualalle. Pyrin luomaan jännitteisen ja salaperäisen tunnelman, suurkaupungin mielikuvan.

Projekti on kaupunkikuvaa ja katukuvaa, vähän arkkitehtuurikuvaakin, jossa painopiste on kaupungin olemuksessa ja tunnelmassa eikä puhtaassa arkkitehtuurissa tai muodikkaan urbaanissa ihmisessä.

Katuvalokuvaus ja amerikkalainen maisemavalokuva toisaalla ja arkkitehtuurikuvaus toisaalla motivoivat ja vaikuttavat tähän projektiin.

City of Ghosts

City of Ghosts started as an attempt to combine street photography and architecture photography with landscape photography. It started from a tourist's gaze, from a notion that a tourist or any new comer in a place like New York would look constantly up in awe of the vertical city. Something that newyorkers almost never do.

City of Ghosts soon became more about meanings in the urban space than about looking at a beautiful and impressive city. It became an effort to understand something of the nature of a place, of its history and present. By showing only a sliver of upper floors in focus and anonymous pedestrians in the foreground I try to see something of the vertical social structure of the city and to discuss both stability and permanence of the city and the constant social changes in it. City of Ghosts not only looks into the beauty of architecture and cityscape but also into the fleeting nature of human life.

Where we are is a place and a space and a location. And it sometimes becomes a landscape. A landscape shows something of that place and space, it is looked at, something which only exists through looking and in representations. And it often shows us the true value of a place. A place is the ground that feels under our feet and a landscape is an image in our heads through our eyes. An image of a landscape can be sharp and clear and it can reveal the essence of a place. Or it can be suggestive and foggy and more like a memory than a representation of a place.
